Arts Inspiration

For Part C, the artist I chose to research was french painter George Seurat (1859-1891) and is known to have created the painting technique called Pointillism.

I chose this artist because I like that he only uses dots in his art rather than strokes.

This is my research on George Seurat

In 1859, he was born in Paris, France and attended the school of fine arts in Paris as his parents were very wealthy and with the help of them, soon set up his own art studio close to their house. After studying the science of optics and colour, he soon discovered that he could place two small dots of different colours and then the eye would mix them. He along with his friend Paul Sinac, invented pointillism.

This is one of his paintings called Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. It took him nearly two years to finish, and people were amazed when it was finished.

Unfortunately, In 1891 he became very ill and died.

Did you know

Before discovering Pointillism, he served a year in the military and after that spent two years sketching in black and white.

He was also very patient as he only used small dots to paint with.

I went to the National Gallery in London to see some of the work of George Seurt exhibited there. This is some of the work I saw.

This painting is called Bathers at Asnières. It is a painting of some middle class men having a well deserved rest on the bank of the river Seine

This painting is called Le Bec du Hoc, Grandcamp. George painted this piece while on summer holidays in Normandy, France. He did the main painting in normandy, but refined it at his studio back home.

This painting is called The Channel at Gravelines, Grand Fort-Philippe. This painting is one of the four paintings he painted at Gravelines, a small port on the northern coast of france near Dunkirk and Calais.

I think that pointillism is a very clever technique but needs a lot of practice and patience to master. I had a go at doing some pointillism and this is the painting I produced. I made the dots using the ball end of a sewing pin and the end of a paint brush

This is my final piece. I am very happy with it and enjoyed making it.
